Demonstrate the ability to determine the development and interests of children through observation
Here is preston he is 3 years old and he has speech delay but he watched and observed the other children playing in the leaves and waited till they were done and moved on then he came over and grabbed my hand and wanted me to go play in the leaves with him we would throw the leaves up in the air and he would say” again and again” and he would laugh and then go grab the rake to make a pile again. Then he laid down and wanted me to bury him. I realize that when the children have a hard time communicating with the other children it definately makes it hard for them to interact. Now Preston is working with a speech therapist and I got to see how she helps him with the sounds I am more able to assist in the way i commicate with him now. Example I was reading a book before nap time and working on the ssss sound…..snake.
“Learning is not a indivdual act but happens in relationship with people, materials, and place”.
(P.65 Early Learning Framework)
So here is a picture of Achilles, Chenoa and Jrae playing in the leaves and being buried and Preston just watched until after they left and wanted me to help do the same thing with hime. We played with the leaves for 10 minutes together until he moved on to the bikes. My job as a ECE is to try and get Preston to engage with the other children so he has a sense of well being and Belonging.
Demonstrate skills working with groups of children; maintaining children’s interest promoting interaction and providing children with a choice about their involvement when appropiate.
I was at the art station and I sat there with Logan and Arthur and Cole and Achilles I proceded to show them i was tracing my hand on a piece of cardboard paper and they thought was really neat and they all grabbed a piece and started to do the same thing it was pretty neat for myself to observe and see where how they can do it two if them did really well during the process and the other two asked for help. Then after we were done they were able to color their hands. I always observed their art creations to see what ones need assitance and which ones play close to details and take their time its very interesting. I always acknowledge their techniques and praised their work for myself it assured me that the 4 years can do it with me showing them at first.
Demonstrate an ability to plan, implement, revisit, extend, document, and evaluate a learning enviroment that is developmentally approapiate, for young children and reflect current educational planning theory.
I Had brought the children outside for playtime before lunch there were still leaves and Preston went right over to the leaves to play in and then our friend Jrae came over and played with us and one was raking the leaves while the other one was getting ready to pick them up to throw in the air. It was such a joy to see and listen. I stayed there to assist and join in to role model deeper engagment for Preston.
Demonstrate a ability to be an effective member of the educator team taking on assigned roles and assigning roles
In the preschool when I arrive at 9:00 am
I would do the indoor/outdoor safety checks
filling the childrens water bottles
and then start on morning snack
make sure art activity is ready for the kids for when they come inside from play time
have snack then circle time read a book and ABC’s circle time
and set up art tables for the kids with paint, glue, scissors, paper or whatever is needed
lunch time
and get ready for outside time til pick up time which is 1:00
then clean up load dishwasher and wipe table and put away art and crafts
and get stuff ready prep for next day activities
This was our daily routine expected of us in the preschool.
Demonstate an ability to accept and act on constructive feedback:
I believe it is when learning how to use a direct voice with the children when asking them to transition into another activity and not let them do something for a few minutes and then proceed, I really observed my mentors when speaking to their direct voice and having the children listen one mentor was very helpful in assisting me with the children. Realizing that it helps keeps allof them on track when we are transitioning into activities.
I also gained some good skills at communicating with the children ” Hands are for hugs”, high fives and handshakes. Hoping with guidance and caring can assist the children in a respect way for all our friends.
When we went on a field trip to horsting farm witht he preschool children My mentor Sarah directed me to attend with Lenord, one of the children and my responsibility was to work with him and it was good.
Demonstrate an ability go engage on going self evaluation
Here is preston as we are trying to keep him engaged with playing with the other children I realize how he struggles with his speech delay he sometimes has a hard time playing with the other children. Most times I always try to joing in whenever I can to keep him engaged with the other children. I always observed Preston with his playing due to his communication with the other kids as he was easily frustrated and tried to help him with his communication with them. Every child is a gift.
Here is Preston drumming on the big drum with the preschool kids he did very well here and had a really good time his listening skills are really good and he had fun most importantly. I believe he loves drumming!
Engage on the on going reflection of personal practice and to demonstrate the personal and Professional attributes related to conduct and professional communication as guided by the ECEBC Code of Ethics and the TRU ECE program
One of my Mentors was really helpful into explaining the protcols and guiding me to help me understand and what to do for example: I had to call one of the parents when it was naptime and one child said his tummy was really hurting, and she asked me to bring his mat into the playroom and call his parents to come and pick him up. I left a message for his Mom and then proceded to call Dad and he came and picked him up. After, his dad arrived he said his tummy was ok and he wanted to stay but then my mentor said it wasnt a good idea and he needed to go home just to be safe.
